Teenage Kicks – Harper’s Bazaar Australia, May 2013

by Georgia on April 14th, 2013 • Leave a Comment • in Articles, Awards & Nominations, Interviews, Magazine Alert, Photo Gallery

Hailee is currently featured in the May edition of Harper’s Bazaar Australia. A new interview has been published alongside a photo spread shot by Giampaolo Sgura and styled by Karla Welch – Hailee looks incredibly suave and sophisticated!

The interview was conducted when Hailee was in Milan for the A/W 13 front row for Max Mara back in February.

Teenage Kicks – Harper’s Bazaar Australia (May 2013)

With her perfect mix of grit and grace, young rising star Hailee Steineld is making her mark in Hollywood while wooing the fashion crowd. Kellie Hush catches up with her front row in Milan.

“She really has the fashion world at her feet,” says the impeccable dressed woman sitting next to me. The owner of said feed, Miss Hailee Steinfeld, has just arrived at the Max Mara show in Milan wearing a chic overcoat (Max Mara, naturally) and, before i can see what she is wearing on those feet, a pack of television cameras, photographers, bloggers and professional Instagrammers swarm her. Two security guards quickly whisk her backstage and the actor doesn’t reappear until seconds before the lights dim. “How old is she?” whispers my other front row neighbour as the first model hits the runway.

Hailee Steinfeld is 16 and has already been nominated for an Oscar (for her role as Mattie Ross in the Coen brothers’ True Grit) and is currently filming opposite Kevin Costner in Three Days to Kill. This year we will see her star opposite Guy Pearce in Hateship, Loveship and Keira Knightley in Can a Song Save Your Life?. She’s also playing Juliet in Carlo Carlei’s upcoming adaptation of Romeo & Juliet. Add to the CV that at 14 Steinfeld was Miuccia Prada’s choice to star in the A/W 11-12 Miu Miu campaign – hence the “fashion world at her feet” comment. So it didn’t come as a surprise when on February 20, the day before the Max Mara show, the teenager was awarded the 2013 Women in Film Max Mara Face of the Future Award, which she will accept formally in the Women in Film gala in LA in June.

Rewind to the day befoe the show. I catch up with Steinfeld at the very grown-up Park Hyatt hotel, just a short stroll from the Gothic Duomo di Milano. The teen has just wrapped shooting the Face of the Future portfolio with Italian fashion photographer Giampaolo Sgura, but shows no signs of fatigue or jet lag (unlike me). She is bubbly and excited about winning an award that in its seven-year history has gone to such major stars as Katie Holmes, Emily Blunt, Ginnifer Goodwin and Chloe Grace Moretz. “I remember when I was filming True Grit, the best advice that Matt [Damon], Jeff [Bridges] and Josh [Brolin] gave me was to ‘have fun and take your time’ and I’ve been able to use that advice at this very minue,” says Steinfeld. “Tomorow I get to sit front row and I’m so looking forward to it. I’m going to try hard to stop myself from pulling out my iPhone and taking a video! It’s such an honour to be among the women who have accepted the award in the past. It’s incredible and I find it’s easier to take everything day by day.”

Steinfeld is an LA native and began acting when she was eight. Jodie Foster’s recent Golden Globes speech is still front of mind, so I ask her how she has coped with growing up in the spotlight. “I am still living it,” comes the reply. “At the moment I don’t have people following me around the intruding on my personal life, and I’m thankful for that. And whether one day that changes or doesn’t change, it comes with the territory. At the end of the day, I’m making incredible films and that’s what I enjoy doing. And getting to experience the fashion side of this whole world has been my playtime and it’s been fun.”

What I can tell from meeting this impressive young woman is that it is unlikely you will see her take the same wrong turns as the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears. Nor is she that silly and dangerous Hollywood size zero. She reminds me of a young Abbie Cornish: bright beyond her years and obviously well brought up. Steinfeld’s chaperone this European trip is her mum, Cheri, and the pair have spent their free time in the Italian fashion capital sightseeing – the highlight so far being a visit to Santa Maria delle Grazie to see Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. Steinfeld still lives at home, where she has been home-schooled since 2008, and her parents are very active in her career. “It’s a big team effort between my agent, mother, father and myself,” she explains. “My parents are very involved. For me it’s only been the last year and a half that I have been given scripts and I’ve been given the choice. There are things out there that I have to fight to do – it wouldn’t be fun if I didn’t. For me it comes down to envisaging it all and being able to feel it before you film it.

When it comes the red-carpet dressing, Steinfeld defers to the professionals, working with stylist Karla Welch, who is also in Milan for the A/W 13-14 shows, and who I suspect is responsible for Steinfeld’s outfit today (a sweet black Max Mara tunic teamed with Steinfeld’s own knocked-about black riding boots). “Karla is totally awesome. We have made some really bold and daring decisions together and they have all turned out to be good,” enthuses Steinfeld, who has owned the red carpet inthe past wearing Prabal Guruung, Prada, Miu Miu and Marchesa paired with red Converse sneakers.

Left to her own devices, she says, she is a fashion procrastinator. “Normally I change about 25 times before I leave my house. I love mixing and matching and, if I’m running late, I stick to jeans,a t-shirt, a leather jacket and some cute shoes. I do get ready thinking what other people will think before I walk out the door, although I make sure I’m comfortable.”

Steinfeld admits that the past two years have been huge and this latest award recognises what a supersonic career trajectory she is currently on. “But I’m very fortunate to still have that balance between my professional life and my private life,” she says. “Where I can walk on the red carpet in a beautiful gown but still have a really normal life at home.”

Hailee on the cover of ‘Fashion Magazine’ – March 2013

by Georgia on January 31st, 2013 • Leave a Comment • in Articles, Interviews, Magazine Alert, Photo Gallery

Hailee will be the March 2013 cover girl for Canadian publication ‘Fashion Magazine’. A teaser has been posted on the magazine’s official site; we can expect a new and insightful interview with Hailee, in which she talks about her many upcoming projects, namely “Ender’s Game”, “Can A Song Save Your Life?” and “Romeo and Juliet”, and a brand new photoshoot shot by photographic duo, Mark Williams and Sara Hirakawa.

The official cover and the first image from the photoshoot have been added into the galleries; a quick recap of the best parts of the interview can be seen below.

The March edition of ‘Fashion Magazine’ will be released in Canadian newsagents from February 11, 2013.

16-year-old former Oscar-nom Hailee Steinfeld covers FASHION Magazine’s March 2013 issue. In this sneak peek, features editor, Elio Iannacci recounts the best moments from his interview with the actress last month.

When asked where she wanted to meet for her exclusive face-to-face interview for FASHION Magazine’s March 2013 issue, Hailee Steinfeld was strategic about her choice. Picking the Fred Segal café in Santa Monica, the Oscar-nominated actress wanted a place where she was surrounded by racks of designer clothes so after she finished talking shop, she could shop around. On her to-do list was getting a dress that she intended to wear to her 16th birthday party, an invite-only bash that was thrown in her honour at the Rolling Stones Restaurant on Hollywood Boulevard. The Louis Vuitton look she went with may have ended up getting major posts around the net—and a few snaps in People magazine—but the day she met up with me, there was another designer Steinfeld was thinking about.

“I love Prabal Gurung, so he’s always an option,” she says, “I remember sitting in the front row to watch his show at fashion week and the music came on and all these gorgeous clothes had such a message. All these strong-willed women—holding their own—walking down his runway looked as gorgeous as ever. I walked away feeling like that’s what I’d feel like when I would put his clothes on.”

No stranger to strong women, Hailee Steinfeld’s seven upcoming films have her playing roles that befit her star turn as True Grit’s Mattie Ross. In a film called Enders Game, she plays a self-described “a A-type genius” alongside a cast that includes Harrison Ford and Viola Davis. In Can A Song Save Your Life, Steinfeld portrays a strong-willed teen struggling with school and a broken home. The latter film has Steinfeld acting alongside one of her heroes, Keira Knightley. “It was my first time filming on the streets of New York,” she says of her scenes with Knightley. “It was very overwhelming – the paparazzi were surrounding us everywhere because the crew caught so much attention. I didn’t know how to handle it so I looked at Keira for help. She was just so graceful, so calm and collected.”

Aside from her experience with Knightley, Steinfeld’s biggest role yet, is as Juliet in the Julian Fellowes adaptation of the Shakespeare classic Romeo and Juliet. For the movie. Steinfeld made a trip to Italy, filming in small pockets of the country. “We shot in an Italian castle and in a small town called Mantua,” she says, excitedly. “It seemed like it was the biggest production the people who live there had ever seen.”

Although she’s busy globe-hopping, reading scripts and basically becoming someone that so many young women look up to, Steinfeld is adamant that she does not want to be put on a pedestal. “I think the second I get wrapped up in how to be a role-model, that’s when things may go wrong, At the end of the day after I finish work or school, I go home and I do everything that a normal teenager has to do. I’m really no different.”

Hailee is still “a huge fan” of the Hunger Games books

by Georgia on May 25th, 2011 • Leave a Comment • in Articles, Interviews

While she was at the Young Hollywood Awards, Hailee chatted on the red carpet to E!Online about her excitement for the “Hunger Games” movies, her opinion of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss and the rest of the cast, and her work with Miu Miu.

“Jennifer looks insane in character as Katniss. Amazing, I am so excited,” Steinfeld revealed to us at the Young Hollywood Awards presented by Bing. “I love the fact that it’s all Young Hollywood in that cast.”

Not that Steinfeld is sitting home crying into a bowl of Cheerios. The actress recently confirmed to us that she will be playing Juliet in Romeo & Juliet, filming in Italy this summer.

But still, Steinfeld may be Hunger Games’ biggest cheerleader.

“I’m a huge fan of the books. I love, love the cast,” Steinfeld told us. “As a fan of the books, I think they have it right on.”

So other than Katniss, which role would Steinfeld be hungry for?

“When I read books and scripts, I picture myself in every role, but with Hunger Games, I just think it’s such a great variety of different characters that are all so different that any of them would be fun to play.”

So diplomatic, that Steinfeld!

We’ll do the diplomacy thing, too, and note that when not getting in costume for a film, the young actress has already seriously impressed the fashion world. Enough so that she was recently named the face of Miu Miu.

“I am so excited,” the fashion-savvy Steinfeld tells us. “A lot of different things fell into place, but I started wearing Miu Miu at the start of the awards season, and I fell in love with the brand and this kind of just happened, but I am so honored and excited by it.”

Not that the 14-year-old is wearing designer duds 24-7—she’s still Hailee from the block.

“Literally H&M is my go-to place for a last-minute outfit,” Steinfeld reveals of her high-low tastes. “I know I can completely trust that I can go there and walk out feeling great.”

Hailee Steinfeld Shares Her Red-Carpet Dressing Tips and Tricks

by Mette on March 23rd, 2011 • Leave a Comment • in Interviews

AGE: 14

WHITE NIGHT: “The Prabal Gurung dress I wore to the Golden Globes was the first evening gown I’ve ever worn. It was actually the last one I put on during the fitting. When I saw it on the rack, I didn’t think I would like it. But my mom said, ‘Try it on—you have nothing to lose.’ I’m glad I took her advice.”

OFF-DUTY: “I’m really casual with my everyday clothes. I wear jeans, T-shirts, and sweatpants. My favorite stores are H&M, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Nordstrom.” social life “One of the most exciting celebrity encounters I’ve had on the awards circuit so far was with the cast of The Social Network. I’m in love with them. They’re so sweet and down-to-earth. I had a really long conversation with Andrew Garfield, and we shared on-set stories. I’d never really been able to talk to another actor like that before.”

ON ICE: “As for red-carpet jewelry, I’ve been trying to stay pretty clean because I want to keep it about the clothes. I can only wear rings, bracelets, and necklaces anyway because I don’t have my ears pierced. My mom won’t let me get them pierced until I’m sixteen.”
