Hailee Steinfeld is in negotiations to join Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson in Can a Song Save Your Life?, written and to be directed by Once filmmaker John Carney.
Exclusive Media is producing and financing the feel-good romance and is selling the title at the European Film Market.
In another musical-themed story from Carney, Johansson’s character moves to New York to pursue her dreams of a singing career but finds herself all alone when she’s dumped by her boyfriend. A down-on-his-luck record producer (Ruffalo) finds her singing in a local bar and the two realize they may be each other’s last chance to turn their lives around.
Steinfeld will play Ruffalo’s daughter.
Anthony Bregman is attached to produce the film, and Judd Apatow is on board as executive producer. A June start date is being eyed.
Steinfeld broke into Hollywood in 2010 with her performance in the Coen brothers’ retelling of True Grit, which earned her an Oscar nomination. She is currently shooting Romeo and Juliet, playing Juliet in a production that has a script by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes and a cast that includes Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti.
Later this year she will shoot Ender’s Game, Odd Lot Entertainment and Summit’s adaptation of the Orson Scott Card sci-fi novel, and she is attached to another sci-fi project, Forgotten, set up at Paramount. Source.
